How to Import to Australia – A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide

Thinking about importing to Australia but not sure where to start?
Here's a simple step-by-step guide to help you navigate your first international shipment with confidence.

1. Get Your ABN
You’ll need an Australian Business Number (ABN) to legally import goods for commercial use.

2. Choose a Product and Supplier
Vet overseas suppliers carefully — always request samples, confirm terms, and get a Pro Forma Invoice.

3. Understand Freight Options
Decide between air and sea freight. Most beginners start with LCL (Less than Container Load) sea freight.

4. Prepare Your Documents
Ensure you receive a commercial invoice, packing list, and (for sea freight) a packing declaration.

5. Work with a Customs Broker
They’ll lodge your import declaration, calculate duties/GST, and handle clearance with the Australian Border Force (ABF).

6. Pay Duties and GST
Most goods attract 0–5% duty and 10% GST, based on the value of your goods and HS codes.

7. Receive Your Goods and Stay Compliant
Keep all records for 5 years and review your landed cost to stay profitable.
